Is Same-Sex “Marriage” a threat to Religious Freedom?
June 17, 2009
Marc Stern, general counsel for American Jewish Congress, said in a Washington Post article, “When you have a change that is as dramatic as has happened in the last 10 to 15 years with regards to attitudes toward homosexuality, it’s inevitable it’s going to reverberate in dozens of places in the law that you’re never going to be able to foresee.” In recent court decisions, the religious freedom of those who hold beliefs in support of traditional marriage has already been trampled. The following cases were cited in the Washington Post article:
– In 2006, Catholic Charities in Massachusetts had to stop placing children for adoption because they were not permitted to give the slightest preference to married heterosexual couples.
– A Christian photographer was forced by the New Mexico Civil Rights Commission to pay $6,637 in attorney’s costs after she refused to photograph a same-sex couple’s commitment ceremony.
– A psychologist in Georgia was fired after she declined for religious reasons to counsel a lesbian about her relationship.
– Christian fertility doctors in California who refused to artificially inseminate a lesbian patient were barred by the state Supreme Court from invoking their religious beliefs in refusing treatment.

Pennsylvania For Marriage supports a marriage protection amendment in an effort to protect the institution of marriage as defined as the union of one man and one woman. When marriage is redefined either in courts or legislatures, there are ramifications that extend to all of society.

Wouldn’t it be better to support an amendment that supports religious freedom instead of an amendement to deny equality to others who are different than you?

I had written to my PA state senator for my area about a PA amendment to our constitution asking him to support it and I never heard from him.

More than religious freedom, the homosexual activists want to destroy the freedom of ANYONE to choose e.g., who to do business with, what political causes to donate money to, what beliefs to advocate for in the public arena. The reality is that their goal is punishment and censure for anyone who publicly rejects the idea that two men having sex is exactly the same as a man and woman having sex. They want to make it illegal to see reality and describe it in factual terms.
