The City of Brotherly love…

October 1, 2007

Philadelphia is a beautiful city with the Liberty Bell, cheesesteaks and so much more. Recently, Christine and I had the pleasure of holding a workshop on the Pennsylvania marriage amendment at St. Charles Seminary. It’s a beautiful property on the “mainline”. It was there that we met a terrific gentleman from center city. His name is James and he is married to Rhonda and they have 8 children.

James came to the workshop because he believes so strongly in the institution of marriage. It troubles him that so many families don’t have both their mom and dad together raising their children. James and Rhonda want to make a difference.

Many large cities, like Philadelphia, are experiencing broken families and in many cases, moms and dads that don’t marry in the first place. James and Rhonda want to spread the word that marriage isn’t always easy, but it’s the best place for kids to grow into strong and healthy adults.

Christine and I want to thank you, James, for taking the time to be with us and for your dedication to marriage. Christine and I love Philadelphia (we were both born here!), but we like it even more knowing you.

See you on the road!

Christine and Eleanor, it’s great to hear of couples like James and Rhonda who work hard at their marriage. It’s sad that so many other couples do not have that commitment. however, I don’t understand why you think that same-sex couples are unable to make the kind of commitment that James and Rhonda have made. There is no proof that Jimmy and Ronald, or Jane and Rhoda are incapable of sharing a strong loving commitment and raising children together.
I noticed that you depend on James Dobson’s information to support your idea that same-sex marriage will destroy heterosexual marriage. Did you also know that the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Counseling Association have all made statements denouncing Dobson’s theories? You might also note that Dobson funds biased research, then declares it to be independent, such as the case with NARTH. I do want you to know that I live in Pennsylvania, and I will be fighting any attempt to write discrimination into the state constitution. As a matter of fact, I’ve already been on the steps of the state capitol to protest! I’ll be there again if your endeavor gains any momentum.

Jesus loves ALL people. How can we pray in church for social justice and then walk out the door and practice hatred and prejudice? Same sex couples can help to grow the church. Many churches welcome same sex couples and are flourishing. Heterosexual marriage is going strong and will continue to do so. The biggest threat to marriage is DIVORCE. If you are truly concerned with healthy relationships and families, then I suggest you work on DECREASING DIVORCE. All families are loved by God. The two mother/father family is not loved more by God than the family with a single mother/father, two mother family etc.
I find it devious to use a pretty colored brochure advertising to save marriage in PA, when in fact it is attempt to discriminate. This is NOT the belief of all of the members of the Roman Catholic Church. We love all in our community and invite them to participate in OUR church!
